The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is a non-profit, policy-driven, international research, training, information center of UNESCO. Its main objective is to promote lifelong learning policy and practice, recognizing education and learning in formal, non-formal or informal settings. In this regard, the work of the Institute focuses on learning and adult education, especially literacy-related activities as a foundation of lifelong learning and non-formal education. Similarly, UIL focuses on alternative learning opportunities for marginalized and disadvantaged groups. Although directed to member countries of the European Union, the Institute also works with developing countries from other continents with special emphasis on Africa.
